This gun is from the renown Ben Michel collection and is pictured in the catalogue. See additional photo text for Mr. Michel’s commentary. Note: In a personal conversation with Mr. Michel he says the catalogue description says Colt 1861 and makes several references to Colt. Indian/Frontier Remington Civil War musket. Very interesting gun! This gun shows numerous frontier alterations, many that are consistent with Indian use. The hammer has been changed with what appears to be a blacksmith made replacement. Copper telegraph wire is holding the barrel to the stock. This is seen on numerous Indian guns as is the metal butt plate being removed. The plains Indian would turn the butt plates into hide scrapers. For a buttplate now is a piece of leather attached by blacksmith nails. We are told this gun was originally discovered in Montana. Very interesting piece!
