Japanese Helment (Kabuto). Saotome School Suji Kabuto. Edo Period. Constructed of 62 russet iron plates with standing ridges. The crown is decorated with five layered spacers (Tehen Kunamoto) of shakudo, copper and silver. The sides of the bowl have brackets for holding ornaments (Wakida). Japanese Letter Opener. Meiji period very fine work. Mythological figure holding bell striker with tiara mou overhead. Signed. On reverse is bats, lightning bolts and clouds. Overall length is 11”. Produced by former sword fitting makers after Haitorei Edict of 1876 forbidding the wearing of samurai swords. Mixed metal is copper and brass.
