First Type Merrill Civil War cavalry carbine. .54 Caliber percussion breech-loading carbine made by H. Merrill, Baltimore, Maryland. Bright finish with areas of scattered light pitting. The stock is good with use dents and dings and about 1¼” of old wood loss at the barrel on the left to rear of the band. The brass furniture is very good. The spare nipple is in the patchbox. The bore is fair with visible rifling. The serial number, “5579”, matches on the lock and action. The sling ring is present. The actions functions correctly. If only this carbine could talk!
