Cased Factory Engraved Colt 1862 Pocket Navy Inscribed 7th Cavalry. Made in 1861. Beautiful gun with 90% of the original blue on the barrel. Lever has most of the case colors. Cylinder has excellent cylinder scene with 40% of the original blue. Frame has mostly turned to a gray patina. Both the back strap and trigger guard have all of the silver plating. The engraving is a vine scroll style that started in 1861. Grips are ivory. The bottom of the grip is scrimshawed “JAS. F. SMITH/SERGT. MAJ”. On the right hand side bottom of the grip and the right had side bottom grip continuing “GEN. CUSTERS/7th CAV. U.S.A./1868”. The inscription appears old and original, but we are unable to find a James Smith, Sergeant Major. We have spoken with a Custer expert and he said while it was strange not to have a record of this particular sergeant major, it was not out of the realm of possibilities. The case is excellent with very fine accessories.
