Rare Jean Baptiste Revol percussion New Orleans target rifle. Made by well-known gunsmith Jean Baptiste Revol in New Orleans. He worked from about 1850 until his death in 1886. His last business and residence address were at 90 Chartres St. (now 400 Charles St.). The Perilliat House, which is now owned by the New Orleans Historical Collection. Additional information on Revol is included with the rifle. The rifles overall length is 48¾”. The 31” octagon .45 caliber barrel has an excellent rifled bore. The rifle’s weight is 13½“. The barrel measures 1.215” across the flats. The barrel is a smooth blue/brown with a few areas of light roughness. The top flat is marked “Revol & Fils N. Orleans 15 Janvier 1854” (Revol & Son N. Orleans 15 January 1854). The barrel has a covered front sight and single folding leaf rear sight. The silvered lock and hammer show traces of case colors, The lock is stamped “J.B. Revol./ N. Orleans.” The German silver trigger guard and Schutetzen style butt plate are very good. The stock is fine with sharp edges, wrist checkering, a nicely contoured cheek piece, ad no chips or cracks. There is also a very intricate adjustable tang sight. The double set trigger action functions correctly. This is a great example of a high-quality southern target rifle made by a well-known maker. In 1868, Revol was awarded a gold medal for the best shotgun made in Louisiana at the second state fair. An indication of his overall high quality. The rifle is fit for the finest collection!
