There were 15,000 of these rifles delivered to the Army in 1865 and 1866. The U.S. sold them back to Remington in 1870. They were then sold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian war. Examples are scarce today. This carbine would make a good restoration project and it is priced accordingly. The 20” round barrel has a dark bore with visible rifling. Metal is smooth with a dark patina. The forend is a fairly crude replacement. The butt stock appears to be original, but has several chips, cracks and dents. The sights are correct. The action functions. The lower sling swivel is absent. These scarce carbines were made by Savage for Remington. Just replace the forend and missing front band, fix the buttstock, add the swivels, and give it a general cleaning. You will have a good carbine priced at less than a third of a complete one.
