This interesting Model 1890 has a 1.5" X 2" cast silver medallion on the right buttstgock that reads EDWARD H. BOHLIN (in an arc) over SADDLEMAKERS (in much smaller letters in a slight S curve) over SILVERSMITHS (smaller letters and slight S curve) over HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA over MADE FOR (bisected by a steer head) BUCK JONES (in engraved letters). Buck Jones was born Charles Fredrick Gebhart in Indiana on December 12, 1891. At the age of 16, he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Philippines during the Moro Rebellion where he was wounded. He was discharged in December 1909 and re-enlisted in October 1910 and honorably discharged a second time in October 1913. He next worked at the 101 Ranch in Oklahoma and then became a member of a wild west show in which he married his wife during one of the shows in 1915. Shortly thereafter, he started in silent films as a bit player and stuntman at $5 per day. He moved up to back-up for Tom Mix and had his first starring role in 1920 in The Last Straw. He was one of the top cowboy stars during the 1920s and was one of the few to successfully transition to talking movies in the 1930s. His life was cut short on November 28, 1942 when he perished, along with 491 others, in the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston. Edward H. Bohlin (1895-1980) was known as the "Saddlemaker to the Stars". Before becoming a saddlemaker, he performed in vaudeville as a trick rider and roper. Tom Mix was one of his first customers. Many of the silver parade saddles used in the Tournament of Roses Parade were made by Bohlin. The Model 1890 rifle has been beautifully restored, probably to prepare it for its presentation which most likely dates to the mid-1930s. It is equipped with a Model 61 octagon barrel in 22WRF. The bore is excellent with bright, strong rifling. It retains approx. 95% of its blue with edge wear and a couple of bright spots. It has a circle P at the top over the chamber. The receiver has the Winchester circled WP proof. The receiver, bolt, and tangs have strong case colors. It is equipped with the correct cartridge carrier and magazine tube for the 22WRF. The stocks are very good with the buttstock having scattered use dents and dings. The action functions correctly. This very interesting Buck Jones rifle is ready for your Hollywood gun collection.
