This pistol started as an Austrian Model 1851 tube lock cavalry pistol. About 1866, Austria sold a large number to gun firms in Liege, Belgium. Having a market for flintlock pistols in Africa and South America, the Belgians altered the tube lock action Model 1851 pistols, for which there was no demand, into flintlocks. This required a new hammer and frizzen and entailed a new Belgium proof of the oval ELG on the barrel at the time the alteration was done. The overall length is approx. 17". The approx. 9 7/8" round 67 caliber smooth bore barrel has a fine bore. In addition to the ELG proof there is what appears to be an impressed H proof mark and behind that, an impressed script WL. The left side near the breech is stamped 854 (1854). The barrel is bright with freckling. The lock has the Austrian Vienna proof mark at the tail, 853 (1853) at the center, and 26 and U between the frizzen spring. The lock and hammer are bright with light freckling. The brass nose cap, trigger guard, butt cap with swivel and ring, and side plate have an even aged patina. The stock is fine with sharp edges, no cracks or chips, and very light usage wear. The ramrod is present. The action functions correctly. Not many guns were back-altered from percussion to flintlock. Don't miss this unusual pistol!
