The Meriden Manufacturing Company, Meriden CT, manufactured approx. 5,000 Triplett & Scott 50 rimfire caliber carbines in 1864 and 1865. Of these, approx. 3,000 had 30" round barrels while the remaining 2,000 had 22" barrels. This carbine is one of the more desirable and scarce 22" barrel versions. The state of Kentucky contracted for 5,000 in January 1865 to arm the Home Guard which was tasked with guarding the Union supply lines during General Sherman's Atlanta campaign. They were delivered too late for Civil War service. This Triplett & Scott carbine has a fine bore with bright strong rifling and a little erosion toward the chamber. All the metal has a smooth gray-brown patina. The left side of the breech frame is marked KENTUCKY in small letters. The left receiver is marked MERIDEN MAN'FG CO. over MERIDEN, CONN. with the serial number, 3663, on the right. The upper tang is marked TRIPPLETT & SCOTT over PATENT DEC. 6, 1864. The butt stock has the typical Triplett & Scott crack on the left along the magazine tube. There are also repaired cracks on the left and right wrist. There is a small chip on the top at the butt plate and a couple of circular dents on the right side of the butt. The forend is good with no cracks or chips and with moderate usage dents and dings. Lower sling swivel at the butt stock toe is present and the upper swivel at the top butt plate tang is absent. The action functions correctly. This is an overall good example of the scarce Triplett & Scott 22" barrel Kentucky carbine that is attractively priced.
