This fine U.S. Model 1816 flintlock musket was made by Marine T. Wickham circa 1822 to 1831. It is finished in "National Armory Brown" and is known as a Type II Model 1816. The overall length is approx. 58". The 42" round 69 caliber smooth bore barrel has an excellent bore. The barrel retains approx. 95% of its original brown finish with loss at the muzzle from bayonet attachment. The barrel has a P over US with an unreadable letter in front at the breech. The lock, cock, and frizzen have all their original dark hardened finish. The lock is marked at the center M.T. WICKHAM in an arc with PHILa below. This is the early style Wickham marking. The trigger guard and butt plate are brown. The bands and side plate are brown. The ramrod and swivels are present. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips and light wear. There is a dented area behind the cock where the backside interfered with the wood upon cocking. The stocker's initials, PS, are to the rear of the trigger guard tang and a crisp V over GF inspection stamp is on the left flat. The action functions correctly. An excellent, correct Model 1816 bayonet with a P on the shank and half bright, half brown finish accompanies this fine musket. The Model 1816 is a must for any U.S. martial musket collection and you won't find one much better than this one.
