About 8200 Gwyn & Campbell percussion carbines were manufactured in Hamilton, OH, by Edward Gwyn and Abner C. Campbell in 1863 and 1864.  They are also called the "Union Carbine" or "Grapevine Carbine". Collectors identify two types based on the configuration of the lever. This second type carbine can be identified by its less curved lever and flat hammer with beveled edge. The 20" octagon to round 52 caliber barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling with a little erosion toward the muzzle. The barrel retains approx. 95% of its blue with a little wear at the muzzle. It ha a small R sub-inspection stamp on the left flat, and PT and the serial number, 3866, on the bottom flat The serial number is repeated on the breech block, lever, and frame. The barrel has the correct front and rear sights. The frame is vertically marked on the right below the hammer UNION over RIFLE. The lock is marked GWYN & CAMPBELL in an arc over PATENT over 1862 (lightly struck) over HAMILTON. O. (lightly struck). The frame, lever, hammer, and breech block have nice case colors. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips and a strong cartouche. Of the Type II carbines, this is a second variation, of which 1370 were manufactured. You will never need to upgrade this very fine Gwyn & Campbell Civil War carbine.
