The percussion Sharps Model 1853 carbine was manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence, Windsor, VT, until October 1856 when manufacturing transitioned to the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, Hartford, CT. These are often called the John Brown Model as he used them in his 1859 raid on the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA. The 21.5" round 52 caliber barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling and firing erosion in the grooves. The gun has a smooth light brown patina. The brass butt plate, patch box, and band have an even patina This carbine is equipped with a 9" sling bar and ring. The right side of the lock is marked C.SHARPS over PATENT over 1852. The tang is marked C.SHARPS over PATENT over 1848 followed by the serial number, 8693. The butt stock is very good with an old repaired chip at the toe, no other cracks or chips, and light overall wear. The forend is good with a missing chip at the top right at the action, stable age cracks at the left tip and bottom center, and light overall wear. The action functions correctly. A decent Model 1853 carbine is hard to find. Don't miss this one.
