The Maynard tape-primed 58 caliber percussion Model 1855 pistol-carbine was the companion piece to the Model 1855 rifle musket, the Model 1855 rifle, and the Model 1855 carbine. Springfield Armory manufactured 4,021 in 1855 and 1856. They were used through the Civil War. The 12" round barrel on this example has a very good bore with strong rifling and some firing erosion. The 12" barrel has the V over P over eagle at the breech and is dated 1855. It is mostly bright with scattered freckling. The blade front sight and two-leaf rear sight are present. the lock is marked U.S. over SPRINGFIELD at the front and 1856 at the tail. The Maynard tape primer door has the eagle with the left side strongly struck and right side weak. The lock and hammer are bright with scattered spotting. The brass nose cap, barrel band, trigger guard, and butt cap have and even age patina. The captured ramrod and swivels are present. The stock is very good with an old age crack toward the butt cap, light wear, and a visible cartouche. The butt cap is numbered 17. The shoulder stock is very good with the brass having a even age patina. The swivel is present. The stock has no chips or cracks and light to moderate issue wear. The stock attachment is numbered 17. It is unusual to find a gun that has matching numbers on the butt cap and stock attachment. The action, including the Maynard tape priming mechanism, functions correctly. This much better than average U.S. Model 1855 pistol-carbine is ready for your Springfield or Civil War collection.
