The 45 Government (45-70) centerfire caliber Model 1879 trapdoor carbine was used during the Indian Wars. The 22" round barrel on this gun has a good bore with good rifling with firing erosion toward the muzzle. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The breechblock is marked U.S. over MODEL over 1873. The case colors have turned a smooth blue-brown. The lock has the eagle with U,S. over SPRINGFIELD over 1873. The lock, hammer, butt plate, and trigger guard have a smooth brown patina. It is equipped with the correct Model 1879 buckhorn carbine sight and the sling bar and ring. The stock is very good with a small chip at the forward sling bar attachment, no other cracks or chips, moderate issue dents and dings, a good firing proof at the rear trigger guard tang, and a strong SWP over 1881 final inspection cartouche on the left wrist. It still retains the correct three piece cleaning rod set and early headless shell extractor in the butt trap, a $200 value. The action functions correctly. This carbine is a nice example of a gun that was undoubtedly used during the Indian Wars. They are fairly hard to find in unaltered condition as most were updated with later sights and bands. With its nice cartouche, early lock markings, correct sight, and rods, this is a very desirable carbine.
