This brass barreled blunderbuss was made by Josias Whitney, 1 Craven Ct, Strand, London, circa 1823 to 1830. The overall length is approx. 32". The 16'round barrel measures approx. 1 7/8" at the muzzle. The smooth bore is dark but good. It would clean up considerabley. The barrel has two London proofs, a cannon style muzzle, two decorative bands, and light engraving at the breech. It is marked "Cork" in script on the top. The brass has a mellow patina and scattered nicks and dings. The lock is marked Wilson in script. It, and the reinforced cock, are bright with scattered staining. The brass trigger guard has an acorn type shape at the front, a flower engraving on the bow, and edge lines on the rear leading to a lightly engraved pointed tip. The brass butt plate has a flower engraved tang with border and edge lines leading to an engraved pointed tip. There is a brass  detailed eagle over blank oval over an acorn at the wrist. The open work side plate is decorated and has three loops. An iron ramrod is present. The stick is good with a repair at the front of the lock and side plate. This repair attaches a replacement forend. The butt stock has three teardrops, to the rear of the lock and side plate and at the rear of the barrel tang. The wood has light to moderate usage wear. The action functins correctly. This is a good example of a British cannon muzzle flintlock blunderbuss by an identified maker.
