The 58 caliber rimfire U.S. Model 1865 "First Allin" trapdoor rifle was manufactured at Springfield Armory from July through December 1865. It is the first of the many variations of the famous Springfield trapdoor firearms. Only 5,000 were produced in 1865. Springfield altered U.S. Model 1861 58 caliber percussion rifle muskets by cutting the breech and adding the trapdoor mechanism. This gun is the desirable full length three band rifle (Many were shortened to two band length.). The 40" round barrel has an excellent bore. All the metal is bright with areas of light staining. The 1862 dated lock plate has traces of its case colors. The breech block has most of its dark case colors. The swivels and bands are present. the stock is fine with sharp edges, two strong cartouches on the left flat, no cracks or chips, and light to moderate issue wear. The action functions correctly. The First Allin is a key piece in any trapdoor collection.
