Serial Number 5158. Made in 1874. 45LC caliber with a 7 ½” barrel. This is a cavalry Model inspected by O. W. Ainsworth. This is a very sharp example of an early cavalry model with s light brown to gray patina throughout the metal. All markings are sharp and crisp and all numbers are matching except the grips. This is an exceptional gun as it was part of Lot 5 of the US Cavalry models. These guns were issued to the 7th Cavalry and had a high probability of being part of the battle of the Little Big Horn. The 5100 serial range contains numerous guns with documentation that were likely veterans of the Little Big Horn. This gun comes with a letter from noted Colt expert John Kopec. Mr. Kopec gun says the only alterations to this gun are a replaced main spring, and a replaced period set of grips along with a drilled backstrap for stabilizing pins which indicates this gun once had two piece grips. These are all very minor alterations. Very fine example of a 7th Cavalry issued Colt Single Action Army!
