This Pattern 1852 percussion Rifle Musket is dated 1862. The 39" 577 caliber (bore meassures .585) has a fair bore with light roughtnss and visible rifling. The barrel has Birmingham proofs with the 25 designating the caliber (577). It has a gray-brown patina with light roughness around the bolster. The lock is stamped 1862 over TOWER at the center and with a crown at the tail. It, and the hammer, have a smooth brown patina. The screw-fastened bands are a smooth brown. The brass nose cap, trigger guard, escutcheons, and butt plate have an even age patina. The stock is very good with good edges, no cracks or chips, and a little wood loss at the bottom of the lock plate. The stock has been pieced together at the rear barrel band. This is undetectable until it is disassembled. It has two crown proofs at the rear of the trigger guard tang and is markee SWINBURN on the bottom about halfway to the buttplate. C.P. Swinburn & Son of 16 to 19 Street, Birmingham, was one of the larger and more important Birmingham gun makers. E. HENDRIKSON is stamped horizontally and vertically on each side of the butt stock. This is most likely a retailer that we have been unable to identify. In addition, the left flat is stamped upside down in small block letters CSA over SAS 46. This most likely was added at a later date. The sling swivels and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. This Pattern 1853 rifle musket would fill that gap in your collection.
