This historical set up comes with the inessentials an Infantry soldier would have carried during his time at the fort. Kit comes with an U.S. Pattern Model 1878 canteen with sling. Outside cover does so staining but the "U.S." is still visible. The original cork is also present. Sling is in over good condition with flaking noted on the surface. 4TH Model Mckeever Cartridge box in overall good condition. Box is chambered for 45-70 and was manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal. Leather is still supple with some flaking noted. Indian Wars period US belt buckle. Original leather is very good with some crazing. Belt buckle has an aged mellow patina and looks great, also attached is a standard issued bayonet and scabbard in overall very good condition with some flaking noted on the leather. Now for the best part! This 45 Government (45-70) trapdoor Model 1879 rifle was made in 1882. The 32 5/8" barrel has an excellent bore. It has the standard V over P over eagle inspection and proof marks. The correct buckhorn rear sight is marked R for rifle. It still retains its original headless attaching screws. The breechblock is correctly marked U.S. over MODEL over 1873. The lock plate is marked US over SPRINGFIELD with an eagle forward of the hammer. All the metal has a smooth blue-brown patina with the breechblock having visible case colors. The stacking and sling swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is good with a visible firing proof and strong SWP over 1882 final inspection stamp on the left wrist. It has the nicks, cents, and scrapes expected of an issued Indian Wars gun. The action functions correctly. Original condition trapdoor rifles of this period are surprisingly hard to find.
