The 45 Government caliber (45-70) U.S. Springfield Model 1880 trapdoor rifle was the first trapdoor rifle to have a rod bayonet. 1,001 were manufactured in 1881 for troop trials. This rifle remains in its "as tested" configuration. The 32 5/8" barrel has a good bore with strong rifling showing light firing erosion. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The rear sight is the Model 1879 with its original slotless attachent screws. The breechblock and lock have a smooth blue-brown patina. All other metal parts are a smooth brown patina with the exception of the triggerguard whih hss copious amounts of blue. The stock is very good with no cracks or chips, light to moderate issue wear, and a very redable SWP cartouche (date not visible). There is an inventory tag nailed to the stock to the rear of the trigger guard tang. The triangular rod bayonet is full length and is in fine condition. The action functions correctly. Fill that pesky hole in your trapdoor collection!
