The Standard Arms Co. of Wilmington, DE, operated from late 1910 to April 1914 with a total production of approx. 7,000 rifles. They manufactured two types of rifles, the Model G autoloader which was the first U.S. gas operated rifle, and the Model M, a slide action only rifle. This Model G is chambered in 30 Remington caliber. The 22" barrel has a fair dark bore with visible rifling. It should clean better. All the metal has a smooth brown patina with the left side of the receiver showing a series of oblique lines which may have come from the gun being on a material with this pattern and encountering moisture which oxidized the pattern in the receiver. In addition to the standard front and rear sights, a tang peep sight is installed. The buttstock is fine with its original finish worn off but with no cracks or chips. The wood has figure in it. The cast bronze slide handle and buttplate are fine. The slide handle has tree scenes and a lion and moose cast in and the buttplate has decorative leaves with the Standard Arms Co. logo in the center. The action functions correctly. The Model G can also be operated as a slide action rifle by closing the gas cylinder and pressing the buttom on the bottom of the slide assembly to engage the slide handle to operate the action. Most were used in this manner as the gas operation mode on most malfunctioned. This interesting rifle is a must for any collector focusing on semi auto rifles or unusual rifles that operate in two modes.
