Noted expert and author John Kopec has speculations of why some cavalry models were nickel plated, but does not know for sure the reason. Approximately 70% of the nickel finish remains. Grips show normal wear. This gun falls in the 6th lot issued to the cavalry where Lot 5 & 6 are the guns issued to the 7th cavalry and could have been used at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. It also falls in a range where it could have been issued to the 2nd Cavalry. This gun comes with a letter from noted expert John Kopec authenticating this gun as all original. This gun was awarded Mr. Kopec’s coveted Golden seal that is reserved for only the finest cavalry models that are completely original and completely unaltered. Very fine Custer era Colt!
