NSN, converted in 1861, musket made in 1836, .69 caliber, 42" round smooth bore musket. 1 of 200 examples of a Harpers Ferry Model 1816 flintlock musket that has been altered by Jesse S. Butterfield with the pellet primer system after the outbreak of the Civil War. Metal and other iron parts are a smooth grey patina with pin-prick oxidation noted. Barrel is marked "Butterfields/PHILADA" Lock plate is marked "Butterfield's/Patent Dec. 11, 1855/Philada. Rear of hammer is marked "Harpers/Ferry/1836". Stock is fine with areas of raised grain present, minor nicks and dings are visible. One of the rarest Civil War conversions.
