Very Rare Smith & Wesson Volcanic From Roy Jinks Collection. .41 Caliber, 6” part round, part octagon barrel with a bright near excellent bore. This is a very handsome example of these extremely desirable and early pistols, this one even rarer with its shorter barrel length. The condition of the arm is lovely and honest, the barrel and magazine tube retaining a healthy amount of original brown finish, thinning and toning to a smooth plum-brown patina showing some very fine minor freckling, light handling marks and remnants of an old protective lacquer. The top barrel flat markings remain completely intact and legible, this example with its markings evenly spaced out “CAST-STEEL SMITH & WESSON/ NORWICH, CT. PATENT”. All edges remain nice and crisp. The frame, lever and hammer are equally attractive, toning to a mild gray patina with generous amounts of silvery case-hardened patina throughout, again showing some very sparsely scattered light freckling, a few light handling marks and the thin coating of antique protective lacquer. All edges are strong and the fit of the side plates is excellent. The frame is embellished with light factory foliate scrolls, executed as tasteful swirling flourishes and the back surface of the hammer and backstrap showing a small foliate motif. Remarkably, the protected corner of the rear sight shows a few strong flakes of original bright blue and the bolt retains some shimmering remnants of fire blue. The smooth walnut grips are pencil numbered to the gun and remain in near excellent condition retaining about 95% original varnish with some scattered light dings and minor wear along the edges. Their fit to the frame is excellent. The original small German silver blade front, rear notch sight and double-hook extractor are intact. The rear sight is serial-numbered to the gun and the action seems to function well mechanically. A wonderful investment-quality example.
