English flintlock fowler lock marked “Ryan & Watson”. Lock marked in fine script “Ryan & Watson”. They are listed as being in business as gunmakers from 1777-1830 at 27 Whittael St., Birmingham, England. This is a 12 bore fowler. The lock has a roller frizzen, which may be an update to the lock, possibly 1805-1810. The barrel is two-stage, being octagon to round. Barrel length is 45½”, overall length is 61”. The trigger guard finial is in the traditional style as found on many English arms of this period and later. Breech Tang has a shell-fan carving, and the carving is sharp and original, not having been freshened. Barrel Proof marks crown over V for inspection after proof, and crown over P London proof? The side plate is pierced and engraved on the borders. The stock has probably had some small repairs along the barrel, where the wood is thin at that juncture and results in small sliver lost. We see no repairs but they may exist, Butt stock and wrist are all excellent. This is a handsome fowler and asset to any collection.
