American Officers Fusil belonging to James Duncan Phyfe, son of the famous cabinet and furniture maker Duncan Phyfe. Silver side plate engraved “James Phyfe”. There is a silver shield form inlay on the wrist with a field canon engraved over the inscription “The Soldier’s Companion in his Country’s Defense”. Approximately .75 caliber. Smooth bore. Barrel is 41” long. No proof marks. Overall length is 52”. Stock is nicely checkered at the wrist. Trigger guard, ramrod pipes and butt plate are brass with fine mustard color patina. Lock has a roller frizzen and border engraving. Barrel wedges have silver escutcheons. There is about a 3” wood repair at the forend cap, done long ago. James Duncan Phyfe was a partner with his father Duncan Phyfe, the Patriotic inscription bears more research. This is a fine officer’s fusil belonging to one of Americas’ most recognized family name.
