There were 14,495 breech-loading percussion carbines made for the Union by H. Merrill of Boston during the Civil War. The Second Type can be identified by the rounded, button type breech latch. The 22⅛” round .54 caliber barrel has a poor bore. All metal has a brown patina with scattered roughness. The lock markings are there but barely visible. The Merrill markings and serial number are on the breech block assembly. The stock is good with no visible marks and an old stable repair at the right breech tang. Action functions correctly. This would make a good filler in a Civil War carbine collection.
