This is a Model 1966 Chassepot needle fire carbine made at the St Etienne arsenal that was arsenal-altered to Model 1874 Gras 11X59R mm centerfire caliber. The approx. 27.5" round barrel has a fine bright bore with strong rifling and some frosting in the grooves. The barrel, receiver, and rear sight are painted black as is seen on guns used in challenging climates by the Foreign Legion. The barrel has the long bayonet guide and lug on the right and a shot guide on the left. The barrel has the serial number, Fj5203, on the left flat, and P.G and circled B and J proofs above. On the right, it is marked S18743 followed by S1876 followed by a couple of small proofs with MA below. The left side of the receiver is marked St Etienne in script with Mle 1866-74 behind it and M80 below. The bolt serial number is matching. The cleaned brass bands, triggerguard, and buttplate are very good. The stock, with matching serial number, is very good with no cracks or chips and the expected issue wear. It also has three proofs and the round issue stamp on the right and a round issue stamp in which April can be read on the left. The swivels and cleaning rod are present. The action functions correctly. This is an interesting, scarce carbine that was most likely used by the French Foreign Legion.
