This English W. Ketland & Co. flintlock pistol is circa 1810. The Birmingham gunmaker, William Ketland , operated as W. Ketland & Co. from from 1808 to 1831. He had a London branch at 2 Copthall Buildings. The overall length of this pistol is approx. 14.5". The 9" round 59 caliber smooth bore barrel has a good bore with light roughness. The barrel has Birmingham proofs and is marked LONDON on the top. It has a decorative border at the rear. All the metal has a smooth brown patina. The lock is marked W over KETLAND over & Co. It has an edge line and a small decorative flower style engraving at the tail. The brass ramrod pipes, trigger guard, butt cap, blank oval escutcheon at the wrist, and side plate have an even age patina. The trigger guard finial and bow have edge lines and the bow has a simple flower style engraving. The ramrod is present. The stock is good with no cracks or chips, the stocker's initials, DD, on the left flat, a W (or M) on the bottom right next to the finial, and even wear appropriate to this pistol's age. The action functions correctly. This is a nice Ketland flintlock pistol. Don't miss it!
