The 45 Government (45-70) centerfire caliber Model 1879 trapdoor carbine was used during the Indian Wars. The 22" round barrel on this gun has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling with light frosting in the grooves. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The breechblock is marked U.S. over MODEL over 1873. The case colors have turned a smooth blue. The lock has the eagle with U,S. over SPRINGFIELD. The lock, hammer, butt plate, and trigger guard have approx. 90% blue. It is equipped with the correct Model 1879 buckhorn carbine sight and the sling bar and ring. The stock is very good with cracks or chips, a visible cartouche and firing proof, JC carved into the left comb, and medium issue wear. The action functions correctly. This carbine is a nice example of a gun that was undoubtedly used during the Indian Wars. They are fairly hard to find in unaltered condition as many were updated with later sights and bands.
