This .577 caliber percussion Pattern 1853 Volunteer Rifle (also known as the Sergeant's rifle) was made by he London Armory Company in 1861/2. The London Armory Company and the British Enfield factory were the only manufacturers of the Pattern 1853 in which the parts were interchangeable. The approx. 37.5" barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The barrel has approx. 90% of its original blue finish. The barrel has a London proof mark and two LAC stamps. The lock is marked crown over V.R at the tail and 1861 over L.A.Co. at the center. The lock and hammer correctly have no edge lines. The walnut stock has sharp edges, very light wear, strong checkering at the wrist and forearm, and is marked in a circle LONDON ARMORY/1862/BERMONDSEY on the right butt. The brass buttplate, trigger guard, and nosecap have an even aged patina. The nipple protector and chain, swivels, and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. These rifles are noted for their superior finish and stock. Jefferson Davis is known to have owned a similar volunteer rifle. Here's your chance to own a very fine example.
