Winchester 1892 Presentation Engraved by Nimschke .38-40

Winchester 1892 Presentation Engraved by Nimschke .38-40 caliber rifle. Made in 1893, very fine gun with inscription “Made for Helen A. Foster Prize Rifle Columbian Exposition”. The Columbian Exposition took place in 1893 in Chicago. We have not been able to find a Helen Foster that corresponds with this riddle, but we guarantee the inscription. This is a nice sharp gun that has a smooth bluish brown patina on the metal. The frame is a smooth gray patina. The engraving is very sharp and the left hand side of the frame has elk panel scenes while the right hand side of the receiver has a panel scene of a dog on the right. There is an almost identical dog pull found in the book LD Nimschske “Firearms Engraver”. This gun has extra engraving on the barrel, forend cap and on the butt plate. I believe the receiver was originally gold plated. Tiffany style silver inlays are on the stock. The wood is excellent with a highly figured butt stock. The checkering was refreshed at some point. A compass of the period was inlayed in the right hand side of the butt stock. This is well done and probably took place at the time this rifle was embellished. This gun comes with a factory letter confirming this gun is a half Magnum deluxe in .38-40. Along with the factory letter is a letter from noted Winchester historian, George Madis. In his letter Mr. Madis confirms all features and that this gun is all original. Extraordinary gun with fantastic engravings by one of the masters of the 19th century!
