This percussion US-marked Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver is circa 1857. The 7.5" octagon 36 caliber barrel has a very good bore with strong dark rifling. THe left side of the muzzle has moderate holster wear. The metal overall has a mostly smooth brown mottled patina with scattered areas of roughness. With the exception of the wedge which is unnumbered, all numbers match. The backstrap and triggerguard have an even brass patina. The bottom gripstrap is neatly stamped BOB NEWLAND. Subinspectors stamps are present on the triggerguard and backstrap. The left side of the frame is clearly marked COLT'S over PATENT over U.S.  The top of the barrel is markied --ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW YORK CITY--. The grips are good with the right side having a repaired crack from top to bottom. The action functions correctly. There are six Robert Newlands listed as Civil War soldiers so we are unable to further determine which Bob Newland carried this gun. Note: one Bob Newland was a Confederate from Texas. This is one of those Civil War U.S. military guns that we wish could talk!
