This is a wonderful German in the Swiss style shooting prize deluxe percussion rifle. The overall length is approx. 49 3/8". The 33 1/8" octagon to round approx. 10mm (~.40) caliber barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. It has a blade front sight and a Swiss style high rounded rear sight. It is equipped with a bayonet attachment. The barrel has approx. 95% of its brown finish with some areas of freckling. The three top flats behind the rear sight are marked in gold inlay from left to right DER STADT HEIDELBERG and EHRENGABE and ZUM BADISCHEN LANDESSCHIESSEN 1863. This translates to The State of Heidelberg honorary prize to the Baden State Shooting [Association] 1863. The barrel breech is marked in gold inlay around the circumference ENGL GUSS STAHL (English steel). The case hardened lock is marked in a flowing scroll F. BAUERNEEIND HEIDELBERG, again in gold inlay. The lock, hammer, and hammer screw are nicely scroll engraved. The breech and breech tang are also case colored and scroll engraved. The trigger guard, buttplate tang and sides, screws, left flat eschutcheon, lower ramrod pipe, and nosecap are also engraved and case colored. The trigger guard bow has an attractive helmet, flag, shield, and cannon engraving scene. All the color case hardening is visible and strong. The buttplate is numbered 4370. The stock, which appears to be deluxe European walnut, is excellent with light usage marks. It has approx. 98% of its original bright varnish finish. The swivels and ramrod are present. The ramrod and bayonet lug are numbered 101. The double set trigger action functions properly.
